Using your FasTrak Toll Tag
I already have a FasTrak toll tag. Do I also need a FasTrak Flex toll tag?
It depends. You need a FasTrak Flex toll tag if you are a carpool, vanpool, motorcycle or other carpool-qualifying vehicle that will use the 101 San Mateo, 101/SR-85 Santa Clara, I-580, I-680 Contra Costa, I-880 and SR-237 express lanes. Otherwise, your Standard toll tag will work on all express lanes as well as all other FasTrak facilities.
NOTE FOR CLEAN AIR VEHICLES TRAVELING IN 101 SAN MATEO, 101/SR-85 SANTA CLARA, I-680 CONTRA COSTA, I-880 AND SR-237 EXPRESS LANES
If you are an eligible clean air vehicle (CAV) using 101 San Mateo, 101/SR-85 Santa Clara, I-680 Contra Costa, I-880 and SR-237 express lanes as a single occupant, you must have a FasTrak CAV toll tag to receive the 50% discount. Solo drivers in eligible CAVs using a FasTrak Flex or Standard FasTrak toll tag in these express lanes will be charged the full toll.
Do I need a FasTrak Flex toll tag to get the discount on toll bridges?
No. To receive carpool discounts at toll bridges, you are required to use the designated carpool lane with a valid FasTrak toll tag. Either a FasTrak Standard, FasTrak Flex or FasTrak CAV toll tag will work.
Do I need a FasTrak Flex toll tag to use the SF-237 and I-680 Sunal express lanes as a carpool?
SR-237 Express Lanes
Yes. A FasTrak Flex or FasTrak CAV toll tag is required to receive carpool discounts in the SR-237 express lanes. To qualify as a carpool, a vehicle must have two or more passengers. Both tags have a three-position switch that must be set in position 2 or position 3+, depending on the number of people in the vehicle. Two-person carpools will receive a 50% discount on the toll. Vehicles with three or more occupants travel toll free.
Solo drivers in eligible clean air vehicles (CAVs) no longer qualify as a carpool in the SR-237 express lanes and must pay a toll. Solo drivers in eligible CAVs will receive a 50% discount on the toll if they use a FasTrak CAV toll tag. The FasTrak CAV toll tag is the only toll tag that will communicate the correct discount toll rate to roadside toll equipment. Single-occupant CAVs using a Standard FasTrak or FasTrak Flex set in position 1 toll tag will be charged the full toll. Single-occupant CAVs using a FasTrak Flex set in position 2 or 3+ may be cited by CHP.
I-680 Sunol Express Lanes
Currently, no. Carpools, vanpools, eligible clean air vehicles, motorcycles and commute buses do not require a FasTrak Flex toll tag to travel toll free in these express lanes. If you have a FasTrak Standard toll tag in your vehicle, it must be placed in your Mylar® bag before travel to avoid toll charges. If you have a FasTrak Flex or FasTrak CAV toll tag in your vehicle, be sure it is set properly to position 2 or position 3+ position when traveling in the I-680 Sunol express lanes.
How do motorcycles use express lanes?
A FasTrak Flex toll tag is required for motorcycles to travel toll free in these express lanes. Set the switch on the face of the tag to position 3+ prior to starting your trip to travel toll free.
If you are riding a motorcycle, you may ride in Bay Area Express Lanes toll free.
I-680 Sunol Express Lanes
There are no special instructions or requirements to use express lanes if you are riding a motorcycle. If you have a FasTrak toll tag, put it in the Mylar® bag that came with the tag to avoid detection and toll collection. If you have a FasTrak Flex toll tag, set it to position 3+ prior to starting your trip.
